# 1 Alien Home

Stony and arid was the beach
where we swam in freezing water
blue as a gutted fish
we huddled by our hearth
as snowflakes fell heavy and wet
clotting the sidewalks in grey slush
with waxed skis strapped to our feet
we slipped into a snow-blind storm
where my thumb froze white
in the underground ice-hut we dug
the crackle of the hydro-plants power poles
hummed us into an uneasy sleep
even as the bluebells broke the white dunes
the red sun rising still had an alien warmth
